A superb copy of this important early map of Michigan. The map is centered on the Great Lakes as they bound the Upper and Lower sections of the Territory with a good portion of Canada included. Very nice color. This map, from the North American volume of Philippe Vander Maelen's seven volume Atlas Universale, was hand-colored at the time of publication. The multi-volume Atlas Universel took several years for this cartographer and publisher to complete. It was published just 8 years after Senefelder's 1819 publication introducing lithography as a commercial printing process. This atlas was the first to cover the world on a uniform scale. The seven volumes contain approx. 400 maps. ; 18 3/4 in. X 23 in. Oping as one full page.
